The new Solo PRO supports HEVC encoding in addition to H.264. However, in some contexts, HEVC is not an option due to technical limitations. These are outlined here.
HEVC Can Not be Transported in RTMP
RTMP, as a protocol, does not support HEVC. Some software uses a non-standard way of inserting HEVC into RTMP, but because it is non-standard, there is no guarantee all software does it the same. Because of this, LiveU Solo PRO does not support HEVC in RTMP.
LRT, the LiveU-developed protocol, can transport HEVC, so whenever using HEVC from Solo PRO, you will use LRT to reach the LiveU elastic cloud, then another protocol from the LiveU cloud to deliver HEVC to its final destination.
Protocols That do Support HEVC
Several protocols are in use today that can transport HEVC, but the most common at the moment is SRT. Thus the first option to send HEVC from the LiveU cloud is SRT Caller mode. When using a Solo PRO, with an LRT subscription, and an SRT destination, you can enable HEVC (or stick with H.264 if preferred).
Future Plans
In the future, LiveU may add other protocols supporting HEVC delivery, as some platforms accept HEVC but not SRT. Look out for news on this in 2023!
